Signs of depression

Depression doesn't look the same in everyone. These are some common signs. Having one doesn't mean you have depression, but it is worth talking about.

In your mind

  • It's hard to concentrate or make simple decisions.
  • You dwell on what went wrong or blame yourself for everything.
  • The future looks hopeless.

In your body

  • You feel tired even after sleeping.
  • You sleep much more or much less than before.
  • Your appetite is bigger or smaller than usual.

In what you do

  • You stop doing things you used to enjoy.
  • You avoid family or friends.
  • It's hard to keep up with work or chores.

In how you feel

  • You feel sad, empty or unmotivated most of the day.
  • You get irritated easily.
  • You feel worthless or like a burden.

Sadness or depression?

Sadness is a normal emotion that comes with a loss or a problem, and it usually passes with time. Depression goes deeper: sadness, tiredness or loss of interest stay with you and affect your daily life. You don't need to know which one it is, or wait any minimum amount of time, to ask for help. A therapist can help you understand it.

When to seek help

Many people struggling with depression look for a depression help center near home. With dafne you can also get help for depression online, in virtual sessions and in your language. Seek help:

How online therapy for depression helps

Therapy gives you a safe space to talk about how you feel, without judgment and in your language. With your therapist you can understand what's happening to you, recognize which situations or thoughts make you feel worse and find ways to take care of yourself day to day. You can also work on what worries you: family, work, loneliness or the changes you're going through. There's no single solution for depression, and everyone moves at their own pace. What matters is taking the first step and not going through this alone.

Seeing a loved one with depression can be hard and confusing. Listen without judging, remind them they're not alone and encourage them to seek professional help. If they're an adult, they can sign up with dafne and talk to a therapist in their language. Caring for someone is tiring too: if you also need support, you can ask for it for yourself.

FAQ about depression

Can I talk about my depression in virtual sessions?

Yes. Virtual sessions let you express yourself calmly, from a place where you feel comfortable. Your therapist is licensed in your state and speaks your language, so you can describe what you feel in your own words.

Do I need to know it's depression before I start?

No. You don't need a diagnosis to start therapy. It's enough to feel that something isn't right. In your sessions, your therapist will help you understand what's happening and decide together how to move forward.

Can you prescribe medication?

No. Our therapists provide therapy but do not prescribe medication. If your therapist thinks medication could help, they will suggest you talk to a doctor or psychiatrist, who can prescribe it.

Do I need health insurance?

No. At dafne you pay directly, without health insurance. You can choose a single session or a package of sessions and start without waiting for approvals, copays or deductibles.
