What is grief counseling?

Grief counseling is time with a licensed therapist to talk about a loss and everything it brings: sadness, anger, guilt or confusion. It doesn't ask you to forget or to stop missing someone. It helps you understand what you feel and find a way to keep going while carrying the loss.

Grief isn't only about a death

Grief shows up whenever we lose something important. These are some of the losses you can work through in therapy:

The death of a loved one

A father, a mother, a partner, a child, a friend. Their absence shows up in big moments and small ones.

A separation or divorce

Even when it was a choice, the end of a relationship is also felt as a loss and leaves an empty space.

A pregnancy loss

A pain many people carry in silence, and one that deserves the same care as any other loss.

An illness or a change in your health

A diagnosis or a change in your body can make you feel you've lost the life you had before.

Leaving your country and your family

Migration brings losses no one names: your people, your language, your land. Read more about migratory grief.

Losing a job or your way of life

A layoff, retirement or a forced change can shake your sense of who you are, your routine and your peace of mind.

Signs grief is weighing on you too much

Pain after a loss is normal. But it may be time to look for support if you notice that:

If you're having thoughts of hurting yourself, call or text 988. For support in Spanish, call 988 and press 2, or text AYUDA to 988. If you're in immediate danger, call 911.

The stages of grief

Many people know the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. But grief rarely follows an order. The stages can mix, repeat or not all appear, and that doesn't mean you're grieving the wrong way.

What is prolonged grief?

For some people, the pain doesn't ease over time and keeps getting in the way of daily life. The American Psychiatric Association describes this as prolonged grief disorder: very intense, persistent grief, with signs such as feeling that part of you died, a very deep loneliness or a sense that life has no meaning. It is estimated to affect between 4% and 15% of bereaved adults. Only a professional can assess it. You don't need a diagnosis to ask for help: if your grief feels heavy, that's reason enough.

How grief therapy can help

In therapy you have a safe space to talk about the person or what you lost, about what you feel and about what was left unsaid. Your therapist goes at your pace, without rushing and without judgment. Together you can work through guilt, anger or sadness, find ways to remember the person who's gone and, little by little, reconnect with your life and the people you love.

Talking about grief in your own language, with someone who understands your traditions and the way your family says goodbye, can make a real difference. Especially if the loss happened far away and you couldn't be there.

Questions about grief

How long does grief last?

There's no set timeline. For many people, the sharpest pain eases over the months, even though the loss is felt for a long time. Special dates or memories can bring strong emotions back. Your grief has its own pace.

How do I know if I need grief counseling?

If the pain keeps you from functioning day to day, doesn't ease with time, or you feel you're going through it alone, talking to a therapist can help. There's no minimum time you have to wait before asking for support.

Can you get over grief?

Getting through grief doesn't mean forgetting. It means learning to live with the loss: letting the pain make room for other things, and being able to remember the person who's gone without the memory stopping you in your tracks.

Grief therapy or a support group?

Both can help. dafne offers individual therapy, with a therapist who focuses on you. Support groups let you share with others going through something similar. Many people use both.

Can I start if the loss was years ago?

Yes. Sometimes grief stays unfinished or comes back strongly long after. It's never too late to talk about a loss.

Do I need health insurance?

No. At dafne you pay directly, without health insurance. You can choose a single session or a package of sessions and start without waiting for approvals, copays or deductibles.
