Are you in danger or thinking about harming yourself?

If it's an emergency, call 911. Call or text 988, 24 hours a day. For support in Spanish, call 988 and press 2, or text AYUDA to 988. dafne is not an emergency service.

Why is it hard for many men to ask for help?

Many men grew up hearing that you tough it out, that men don't cry and that problems sort themselves out. Others don't want to worry their family, because they feel their job is to provide. And between work, overtime and exhaustion, there's hardly ever time to think about how they're doing. Sometimes they simply don't know where to start. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness: it's a way of taking care of yourself and the people who depend on you.

Common issues men bring to therapy

Anger and irritability

Blowing up over small things, always feeling on edge and not knowing where so much anger comes from.

Depression in men can look different

It doesn't always look like sadness. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), many men with depression seem angry or irritable instead, and they're more likely to see a doctor about physical symptoms, like pain or tiredness, than about how they feel. Drinking more or using drugs can also be a sign. This can happen at any age: depression in young men, for example, is often mistaken for a bad temper or stress. If you recognize yourself in any of this, learn about therapy for depression.

Talking by phone can make it easier

For many men, a phone call is easier than sitting in an office. You don't have to go anywhere or run into anyone, and you don't need a camera: just your phone and a private place. You can talk from home, from your parked car or from wherever you feel comfortable, in your language. Learn more about phone therapy.

Why a US license matters

A US-licensed therapist is authorized by the state where you live to provide therapy, not just support or advice. They meet that state's professional and ethical requirements and answer to its licensing board. As part of your therapy, they can also issue an attendance letter if you need one. Just let us know when you start therapy.

FAQ about therapy for men

Does asking for help make me weak?

No. Asking for help is a brave and practical decision: just as you see a doctor when something hurts, therapy helps when what weighs on you is what you feel or think. Talking to someone who doesn't judge you can take a weight off your shoulders.

Will my therapist be a man?

We can't guarantee it. At dafne we match you with a therapist based on the state where you live and your language, so they're licensed where you are and can understand you. What matters most is that you feel comfortable talking.

Do I have to talk about my feelings from the first session?

No. You decide what to share and at what pace. In the first session your therapist asks questions to get to know you and understand what brings you. You can start with something practical, like work stress or trouble sleeping.

Can I have my session on my work break?

Yes, if you're somewhere private where no one can hear you and you're in your state. For example, in your parked car or somewhere quiet outside. Never have your session while driving.

Do I need health insurance?

No. At dafne you pay directly, without health insurance. You can choose a single session or a package of sessions and start without waiting for approvals, copays or deductibles.
