To provide therapy, your therapist needs a license issued by the State of California, and you need to be in California during the session. That license authorizes them to provide therapy, not just support, and requires them to follow the state's professional and ethical standards. You can check any therapist's license on the California Department of Consumer Affairs license search, which covers the Board of Behavioral Sciences and the Board of Psychology.
